May 22-26

This week in Third Grade...

**We will have the Downers Grove Fire Department stopping by St. Joe's with the fire truck on Thursday for the last session of Fire Safety!!**

Spelling - The last spelling test on lesson 30 will be on Friday. 

Reading - The last vocabulary quiz on lesson 30 will be on Thursday. On Friday the students will take an End of the Year Reading test covering reading strategies and concepts they have learned this past year. We will continue to review in class this week. 

Math - We will finish Chapter 12 this week on two-dimensional shapes. The students will be given a take-home test to complete before the end of school on Chapter 12. 

Religion - This week we will learn about Jesus' New Commandment to love one another as He loves each of us. In class we will discuss the importance of love, how to show love for others and God. 

Social Studies - The students will be finishing Chapter 8 this week on inventors and inventions. The Inventions Timeline is due Wednesday. The students will have their last Social Studies test on Chapter 8 on Thursday. This will be an open-book test. 

Science - The 3rd graders will review Unit B Ch.1 this week with a take-home test to complete by Wednesday.

May 15-19

**This week's schedule will be a little different with the VIP shows. The 3rd graders will have lunch an hour early on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday will be a 12pm early dismissal day.** 

Spelling - The spelling words for lesson 30 will be review words from the last 4 lessons. The lesson 30 spelling test (last spelling test, yay!) will be next week. There will be no spelling test this week. 

Reading - We are on the last reading lesson. This week we will focus on reviewing skills and concepts learned in 3rd grade. We will have the reading test and vocabulary quiz next week. There will be no reading test or vocabulary quiz this week. The last book report is due Friday. 

Math - The third graders will be finishing up chapter 10 on measuring and time. The Chapter 10 Test will be Wednesday for Miss Martinez's class. 

Religion - This week the third graders will be finishing up chapter 12. The Chapter 12 religion test will be on Tuesday. 

Social Studies - The students will continue working on their inventions timelines in class this week. The final timelines are Due Wednesday, May 24.

Science - The third graders will continue to learn about the states of matter in Unit B Ch.1 this week. The students will be given a take-home science test early next week.

May 8-12

This week the third graders are going to the Adler Planetarium on Wednesday. We will leave school at 9am and will return in time for dismissal. Please remember to give your child a sack lunch with a drink and to have a good breakfast. The students will not be getting a snack before lunch. 

Reading - In class we will read the expository nonfiction story "The Planets", practice lesson 29 vocabulary, practice making predictions, use: commas, capitalization, quotation marks, underlining, and homographs correctly in writing. The last book report is due Friday, May 19.

Spelling - The lesson 29 spelling words this week will focus on the prefixes over, bi, and non. 

Math - In math this week the 3rd graders will continue working on telling time and finding elapsed time. They will also work on measuring with rulers to the nearest inch, half-inch, and quarter- inch. The students will learn how to estimate and measure liquid volume and mass. 

Religion - In class we will continue to learn and discuss how the Church's mission is to share Jesus' Good News with people of all nations.  We will review that the Church is catholic because she is everywhere and welcomes all.

Social Studies - This week in class the students will be working to research facts about 5 different inventions. The students will then make a timeline of these inventions. A letter with more details about the project was sent home with the students. The final timeline is due Wednesday, May 24.  

Science - In science the 3rd graders will begin Unit B Ch.1 on physical science. They will learn about the states of matter. They will be able to describe matter by its properties:  size, shape, color, length, volume, mass.

May 1-5

Happy May to everyone!!
Our 3rd grade readers and candle bearers did a great job at the St. Joseph the Worker Prayer Service on Monday! 

Spelling - The lesson 28 spelling words this week will all contain the suffixes -able, -ible, -less, and -ous. 

Reading - This week the 3rd graders will read the realistic fiction story "The Science Fair", practice lesson 28 vocabulary words, practice making predictions when reading, use contractions and homographs correctly in writing. The last book report of the year is due May 19. 

Math -  Mrs. Moss's class will have the Ch.11 Math test on Tuesday. Miss Martinez's class will have the Ch.11 Math test on Wednesday. The Ch.11 Test will cover perimeter and area. Later this week in math we will be going back to complete Chapter 10 in the math book on telling time and measurement.

Religion - The students will begin Chapter 12 in the religion book. We will focus on the Church's mission to share Jesus' Good News with people of all nations. In class we will discuss that the Church is catholic because she is everywhere and welcomes all.

Science - The students will review Unit C Ch.4 in class this week. The Unit C Ch.4 Test will be on Thursday. 

Social Studies - In Social Studies this week the 3rd graders will learn about inventors and different inventions that were made to help improve communication over the years. They will also learn about other famous inventions and their inventors that have helped people all over the world.

April 24-28

This week in 3rd Grade....

Spelling- The spelling words this week will all contain vowel pairings in the words. We will practice identifying these vowel pairings in the words and separating the words into syllables. 

Reading - The students will read the expository nonfiction story "Spiders and Their Webs", practice lesson 27 vocabulary words, continue practicing making inferences, use multiple meaning words correctly, identify and use adverbs in sentences, and review poetry. 

Math - This week in math the 3rd graders will continue to use perimeter and area. We will work on finding the area of combined rectangles. The students will solve problems where the figures have the same perimeter but different areas or the figures have the same area but different perimeters.The next Math test on area and perimeter will be early next week (exact date TBD).  

Religion - Some of the third graders will be readers or candle bearers at the St. Joseph the Worker mass on Monday, May 1. We will practice in class this week and at Church. 

Social Studies - This week the third graders will begin learning about different inventors and inventions. They will learn about inventions that have helped improve transportation and communication over the years. 

Science - In Science this week the students will learn about the water cycle and different storms. The Chapter 4 Science test will be on Wednesday, May 3.

April 17-21

Happy Easter! We hope everyone had a relaxing long weekend with family!

The Third Graders are getting right back into things this week. 

**Please remember to sign and return field trip permission slips with the money as soon as possible**

**Tuesday is the last day to bring in $1 to wear crazy socks on Wednesday! **

Spelling - This week the Lesson 26 spelling words will be with the suffixes -tion and -sion.

Reading - For reading this week the 3rd graders will read a fantasy story (Charlotte's Web), practice lesson 26 vocabulary words, learn irregular verbs, make inferences and find the sequence of events in a text. **Book Reports are Due Friday**

Math - The students will continue learning about perimeter and area this week. They will practice measuring and finding perimeter, find unknown side lengths, practice measuring area and using area models. 

Religion - We will be discussing the importance of celebrating Pentecost after Easter. The 3rd graders will continue to learn about the leaders of the Church. We will go over how the Church is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.

Social Studies - In class we will finish Chapter 7 and review for the Chapter 7 Test on Monday, April 24. 

Science - In Science the students will begin Chapter 4. They will learn about clouds, storms, and the water cycle. **Visual Aids are due Wednesday**

April 10-12

This week in 3rd grade will be a little different because of the shorter week. 

Spelling - There will be no spelling test this week. The Lesson 26 spelling words will be given to the students on Monday after Easter. 

Reading - There will be no Reading Test or Vocabulary quiz this week. In class this week the 3rd graders will be working on a book report. They chose a biography book to read in class and will fill out their book report sheet when they are done reading the book. 

Math - We will continue to work on time this week in Math. The students will practice reading the time on a clock, telling time with A.M and P.M, measuring and using time intervals. 

Religion - The 3rd graders will read about and discuss the importance of Holy Week and Easter in class. 

Social Studies - This week the 3rd graders will learn about the English community of Jamestown that was started in Virginia. 

Science - The students from both 3rd grade classes will be working on a STEM project together in class this week. They will work in groups of 3-4 to build a container that will protect an egg from breaking at a height of 3 ft! They will be working together to measure and test their containers before the "final drop" on Tuesday. 
** The Visual Aid for the Solar System Project is Due April 19**
