December 5-9

Happy Snowy December to All!!

Spelling - The lesson 12 spelling words this week will all contain the letter digraphs: kn, gn, wr, and gh. In class we will focus on these consonant pairs that stand for one sound or make different sounds and have silent letters.

Reading - For lesson 12 this week the students will read the realistic fiction story A Pen Pal for Max in the Storytown Text. In class we will continue to practice identifying the plot in a story, work on using context clues or synonyms/antonyms to define unknown words. This week the 3rd graders will also identify and use singular or plural pronouns in writing.

Math - The 3rd graders will finish up Chapter 4 on multiplication this week. We will work on multiplying with 8, 9, and solving multiplication word problems. It would be very helpful to continue practicing multiplication facts at home with flashcards. The Chapter 4 Math test will be early next week.

Religion - We will continue working on Ch.6 in our religion book about the importance of prayer in our daily lives. To help prepare during the Advent Season for Christmas the school will be collecting mittens or gloves to donate to those less fortunate. The students are encouraged to complete extra chores or help others to earn some extra money to purchase mittens/gloves to donate. The last day to donate mittens or gloves will be Friday Dec.16.

Social Studies - In social studies we have been learning about traditions and holidays in our nation or around the world. The 3rd graders will begin working on a Christmas Around the World project in class. Each 3rd grader will be assigned a country to research the Christmas traditions celebrated there. The students will research in class using nonfiction text or websites linked on our 3rd grade blog (under the Social Studies tab). We will do most of the research and work in class, but the students are able to do any extra research at home. We will be working on this project in class over the next two weeks. The students will be given a handout further explaining the project on Wednesday. The completed project will be due Monday December 19

Science - This week in Science the students will learn to differentiate between endangered and extinct animals. They will explore how people can change environments and learn about the interdependence of plants and animals.

Tests/Quizzes this week:

  • Lesson 12 Vocabulary Quiz Thursday
  • Lesson 12 Spelling Test Friday
  • Lesson 12 Reading Test Friday (about identifying plot and using context clues)
